The Green Tara Mantra is an ancient Sanskrit invocation dedicated to Green Tara, the Buddhist Bodhisattva of compassionate action and swift spiritual aid. It is primarily a plea for protection, healing, and liberation from both spiritual and worldly suffering. Each syllable holds a specific layer of spiritual intention: "Om", the primordial sound of the universe; represents the body, speech, and mind of all Buddhas. "Tare", represents salvation from suffering, mundane dangers, and the cycle of rebirth (samsara). "Tuttare", represents protection from the eight great fears. "Ture", the "Swift One" who removes obstacles and fulfills the spiritual path. "Soha", a concluding word meaning "so be it" or "may blessings rest upon". The overall meaning: "I prostrate to the Liberator, Mother of all the Victorious Ones."
Tara’s history dates back roughly 1,500 years to ancient India. According to Buddhist legend, Green Tara originated from the tears of Avalokiteshvara (the Bodhisattva of infinite compassion). As he wept over the suffering of the world, his tears formed a lake, and from a lotus flower that emerged from these waters, Green Tara was born. She vowed to remain in female form to work tirelessly until all sentient beings were liberated.
