The chant is frequently classified as a modern adaptation of Indigenous wisdom. Some sources trace its melodic and lyrical roots to traditional South African or Indigenous (Plains and Hupa) folk chants. These chants were often adapted during the 1970s and '80s by the global earth-spirit and peace movements. It was popularized by Libana when they recorded it for their album, A Circle Is Cast, in 1986.
